The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says two people were sent to the hospital after a speed boat crash around 7 p.m. Saturday on East Okoboji Lake.
The DNR says initial reports show a 42-foot-long catamaran style racing boat was operating on East Okoboji Lake when it struck a dock and launched over a boat hoist containing a boat, came ashore, and crossed 255th Avenue before stopping. The boat operator 73-year-old Duane VerMeer and passenger, 68-year-old Lisa VerMeer, both of Spirit Lake, were taken to Lakes Regional Health Care before being transferred to Sioux Falls. Their condition is not available.
State and local officials are investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
