Iowa Congressman Zach Nunn and Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks are among the seven Republicans who joined Democrats to pass a War Powers Resolution in the U.S. House that would limit President Trump’s authority to continue military action in Iran.
Nunn, Iowa’s third district congressman, said on social media last night that “Iowa has already paid a devastating price in the conflict.” He cited the two Iowa service members killed in Kuwait. Nunn said he “will not support another open-ended war.” Nunn said if combat operations are to continue, congress needs to authorize it. Mariannete Miller-Meeks, who represents Iowa’s first congressional district, issued a written statement this morning. Miller-Meeks said she “will not vote to keep American soldiers in an open-ended war, with Iowans paying too much at the pump.” Miller-Meeks said President Trump needs to present a plan for ending the war to congress and the American people. Miller-Meeks served 24 years in the Army. Nunn has served in the Air Force, the Iowa National Guard and he’s currently in the Air Force Reserve. Both are in tight races for re-election and have been getting direct support from Trump Administration officials. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin spoke at a fundraiser for Miller-Meeks this past Saturday. Last month Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth headlined a fundraiser for Nunn at the State Fair.
State Senator Sarah Trone Garriott, the Democrat who’s running against Nunn, said she’s “always been against this war,” while Nunn has previously voted five times to keep it going and “Iowans have paid more for gas, diesel, fertilizer and groceries” as a result.
A Senate vote on the war in Iran is unlikely after a War Powers Resolution passed in June, but that outcome was reversed the following day when two Republican senators changed their votes. Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, voted against the War Powers Resolution in the House last night. Fourth district Congressman Randy Feenstra also voted no.

With the negotiating window closed, sustained combat operations now require congressional authorization.
