A major Iowa employer will offer health-insurance benefits for same-sex couples. Radio Rockwell Collins hires scientists, highly skilled technicians, and designers from all over the world to produce the radios and other avionics equipment it sells to the military — of this and other nations — as well as major airlines. Even as many companies are trying to cut extras like health insurance, Rockwell says it’s expanding its package to attract the best people in a competitive industry. While a minority of companies offer health insurance for gay partners, it’s a large minority — over 42-percent — among the biggest companies in the country’s Fortune 500. Gay partners will have to meet state residency, age and other requirements, and Collins still will not offer health coverage for heterosexual domestic partners who aren’t married.
