The pace of action on the blue track at Drake Stadium in Des Moines increased dramatically today. Clinton’s Sheena James won the high school girls’ shot put title with a winning toss of 45-feet six and a quarter inches, 11th best in the country this year.James knew she had good distance right away as soon as the throw left her hand.Sioux City West’s Quincy Christie uncorked his winning long jump in the first round of prelims. Christie won the event with a distance of 22 feet five and a half inches in his first ever trip to Drake Stadium. Christie was surprised he jumped that far on his first try.Crystal Hanson of Roland-Story cleared five feet seven inches to win the high school girls’ high jump and says it is a much different feeling from winning a state title last spring.Hanson was out to better last year’s fourth place finish at Drake, as she says she was so disappointed in the effort last year.In one of the top college events of the day, Stanford set a best in the world time in the mile relay. Stanford’s Grant Robinson says it’s a race they’ve looked forward to for awhile, as milers seldom get to run in a relay race..
