Though North Korean fighter jets taunted a U.S. surveillance plane over international waters a few days ago, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s not sure the incident merits injecting fighter escorts into all U.S. reconnaissance missions. Grassley says the government should provide whatever protection U.S. planes need and there should be -no- danger when they’re over international waters. The weekend encounter took place over the Sea of Japan. Grassley says North Korea is just trying to flex its muscles.Four North Korean “Mig” fighters intercepted the unarmed R-C 135 and locked on with radar but did not fire. Back in 1969, a North Korean plane shot down a U.S. recon plane, killing all 31 Americans.
