A Forest City native is among hundreds of contestants hoping to become the next “American Idol.” 22-year-old Jasmine Baxton was chosen to compete at a screening in Mason City, and last Friday passed a first round of competition in Rochester, Minnesota. Her father Edgar Baxton says the competition is already proving to be an education in itself. He says she’s been writing music, doing little performances at a couple clubs around Waterloo. Baxton says his daughter, who’s known to friends as “Jazzy,” She’s got an education and she can sing, and he hopes this can become a way to reach her dream. Jazzy graduated from Wartburg last December, and now works as a D-J at a Waterloo radio station. This week she’s taking part in more American Idol finalist competition in Los Angeles.
