M-C-I workers in the Cedar Rapids area are worried about their jobs as owner WorldCom has announced 17-thousand workers will be laid off, beginning Friday. WorldCom officials today admitted disguising nearly four BILLION dollars worth of expenses, throwing the company’s future in doubt. Doug Neumann, a spokesman for the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, says there’s a wait-and-see attitude.Neumann says it’s way too early to know what kind of impact WorldCom’s news will have on Cedar Rapids, but he admits folks are anxious.M-C-I, a long distance company owned by WorldCom, employs about 36-hundred people in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area. WorldCom’s stock price has plummeted, and its financial records are being examined by federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
