Iowa State lost a heart breaker to Alabama in the Independence Bowl last night, 14-13. Cyclone kicker Tony Yelk missed three field goals, including one at the end of the contest from 47 yards. It was long enough, but missed by inches. I-S-U coach Dan McCarney says even in losing, Iowa State garnered more respect for the program. Cyclone quarterback Seneca Wallace had a big game, and McCarney says he wouldn’t trade Wallace for any quarterback in America. Alabama coach Dennis Franchione didn’t know how the game was going to turn out until Yelk’s kick.I-S-U’s Yelk also had a punt blocked in the 4th quarter, and it set up the go-ahead Alabama touchdown. Iowa State dominated the game, with more passing AND more rushing yards than ‘Bama.
