Democrat Governor Tom Vilsack and Republican legislative leaders agree onthe agenda for next week’s special session, but not all the details. Allagree the plan which remaps Iowa’s congressional and legislative districts,as well as the bill that would ensure you get to keep ALL your federal taxrebate without the state taxing it. But the two sides are quibbling over thebill that makes it easier to build new power plants in Iowa. SomeRepublicans are still reluctant to renew a business tax which finances theoperation of 56 workforce development offices. Newton Mayor Dave Aldridgesays the workforce development office in Newton is a big economic boost forthe community. Governor Vilsack invited Aldridge and other Mayors to DesMoines yesterday to pressure the G-O-P on the issue.The following Workforce Development offices will close July 1st if thelegislature doesn’t take action: Algona, Ames, Atlantic, Audubon, Boone,Carroll, Centerville, Chariton, Charles City, Cherokee, Clarinda, Clarion,Corning, Creston, Decorah, Denison, Emmetsburg, Estherville, Fairfield,Forest City, Fort Madison, Glenwood, Grinnell, Guthrie Center, Harlan,Humboldt, Independence, Iowa City, Iowa Falls, Jefferson, Keokuk, Knoxville,LeMarts, Manchester, Maquoketa, Missouri Valley, Monitcello, Mount Pleasant,New Hampton, Newton, Oelwein, Osceola, Oskaloosa, Pella, Perry, Pocahontas,Red Oak, Sac City, Sheldon, Shenandoah, Sioux Center, Spencer, Storm Lake,Washington, Waverly and Webster City.
