A big meeting at the statehouse today. Republican legislators will meet with democrat Governor Vilsack to start talking about making 40-million dollars worth of cuts in the state budget. Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows says even education spending might be cut if things get dramatically worse.Vilsack has suggested using some gambling taxes that haven’t been spent yet on construction projects to cover any shortfall, but that’s not an idea Iverson likes.House Republican Leader Christopher Rants of Sioux City says the goal is to take action by March 1st.Unlike Iverson, Rants says there’s no need to cut spending on Iowa’s public, K-through-12 schools, and Rants says his fellow House members will insist education spending be kept off the table when budget cuts are made.
