A group of students walked across the Iowa State University campus in Ameslast night in an apparent protest. Reports say the students chantedprofanity outside the home of ISU President Martin Jischke, complainingabout Jischke’s move to make the annual VEISHEA student festivalalcohol-free. Ames police department spokesman Randy Kessel says the groupincluded 200 or more students. Kessel calls the situation a “gathering.”While some reports have characterized the protest as a riot, Kessel says itdidn’t come close to past disturbances. He says no one was arrested oreven cited. The protest started around 10 p-m at the Towers, dorms on thesouth edge of Ames, and ended a few hours later at I.S.U.’s Jack TriceStadium. VEISHA will be staged in mid-April.
