The state Fire Marshal’s office is participating in events for NationalArson Awareness Week this week. Assistant state fire marshal, George Howe,says they’re trying to raise awareness that you can help solve arson cases.He say a majority of the arson cases in the state go without anyone everbeing charged.Howe says you can help prevent arsons in your home and business by keepingthings clean around the home or business.Howe says 50-percent of the arson fires are set by people under the age of18. He says there are a variety of reasons why the kids commit the crime,some because children lack supervision, and some because the kids areseeking help.Howe says there were 19-hundred arson fires in Iowa in 1997 with a dollarloss over nine-million dollars.
