.A study designed to examine why some crops survive floods better than othersis underway in the I-S-U college of Biochemistry. Assistant professor MarkHargrove hopes the results lead to crops that can better survive floodingand freezing. Hargrove believes a crop’s survival in standing water is directly related toa protein that transports oxygen. Hargrove says genetic engineering and plant breeding techniques could oneday help scientists with plant survival during flooding.
