While disappointed his farm aid plan was shot down, Iowa Senator Tom Harkinis gratified that a lesser, but still substantial, emergency relief packageis in the works.Harkin, a democrat, authored a farm bailout plan totalling 10-point-7billion dollars. The republican-backed 7-billion dollar package gained favorbut is “on hold” as Senators try to reach a compromise. Harkin says that dealmay come within hours.Congress adjourns for its summer break on Saturday. Even if the Senate doespass its farm relief bill today, the House still hasn’t approved of its ownversion — meaning farmers still won’t see immediate financial help.Iowa’s Ag Secretary Patty Judge says 6-thousand Iowa farmers are in dangerof foreclosure today — and another 30-thousand will soon be in perilwithout federal help.
