Two of Iowa’s Congressmen disagree over a budget plan for the VeteransAdministration which was approved last night by the U-S House. Under theplan, there’s a one-point-seven Billion dollar increase in V-A spending onmedical care. Congressman Jim Nussle says it’s good news for thoseconcerned about the situation at Iowa’s V-A hospitals.Nussle, a republican from Manchester, says the extra money should ensurethat Iowa veterans facilities remain open. But democrat Congressman Leonard Boswell said the Republicans don’t provideenough extra money to the Veterans Administration. Boswell, a Vietnam-eravet from Davis City, favors a three-Billion dollar increase. A report fromthe V-A Medical Inspector found problems at V-A hospitals in Knoxville andIowa City. The report confirmed a diversion of patients from the Des MoinesV-A hospital and a lack of bedspace, plus a patient-to-nurse ratio that’stoo high.
