Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes promises he’ll use adifferent style of campaign advertising — if rival George W. Bush agrees toa series of one-on-one debates.In 1996, Forbes used a barrage of pointed ads to criticize front-runner BobDole. Dole says those Forbes ads damaged his chances against Bill Clinton.Bush’s campaign has begun to prepare for a Forbes attack this time around.So far this year, Forbes has run advertisements which tout his views onsocial security and tax policy, as well as ads which feature his family.On Friday, Gary Bauer — another G.O.P. candidate — said Forbes had”peaked” and couldn’t buy any more votes than he has already. Bauerproclaimed himself the “conservative alternative” to Bush. Forbes holds adifferent view.Forbes made appearances in Des Moines, Ames, Marshalltown and Fayette onSaturday. Orrin Hatch campaigned in eastern Iowa and signed a pledge,promising to devote attention to the long-term care issue.
