Iowans who want to go somewhere momentous to welcome the new millennium hadbetter purchase their tickets soon. Travel agents say the groups that areoffering New Year’s weekend promotions began dropping their prices dueto a lack of interest — and now those trips are flying away.Nancy Martinez of Continental Travel in Des Moines says some people areinterested in trekking to Europe or Australia to be among the first to seethe year two-thousand. She says most of her Iowa clients are staying in thishemisphere to stay warm for the New Year’s weekend.Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean are the top destinations for Iowans.Martinez says she doesn’t buy into all the Y-2-K hype and has booked manyclients to travel on December 31st and on January 1st without a worry.She says anyone with concerns who still wants to get away for the big NewYear’s hoop-la should simply plan to travel instead on December 30th orJanuary 2nd.
