Up to 18-hundred Iowa National Guard soldiers are up for possible Y-2-K duty. Those troops will be on stand-by, should there be any catastrophes. Colonel Robert King, a spokesman for the Iowa Guard, will be on active duty over New Year’s, along with 40 other soldiers. Sixteen of the state’s national guard armories will be staffed, each with two soldiers, who will use high-powered military radios as back-up communication. The Iowa State Highway Patrol’s radio system will be used to dispatch troopers to check Y-2-K problems, too.
