An amendment to include homosexuals on the list of protected persons in Davenport’s civil rights ordinance continues to generate controversy. Davenport Alderman George Nicholas says he’s concerned the ordinance would force fraternal organizations to rent their facilities to groups they deem immoral. Civil Rights Commission Director Judy Moral says groups that offer their facilities to the public would have to follow the law and let anyone use them. Nicholas plans to offer an amendment to the ordinance that would exempt the groups from the ordinance. Nicholas’ amendment will be discussed in a committee meeting Monday. The City Council has already passed two readings of the proposal and will consider the third and final reading Wednesday.
