Severe Weather Awareness Week wasn’t enough. The Insurance Information Institute is putting out another type of tornado warning as a supplement. While the awareness week focused on teaching the difference between tornado watches & warnings, the Institute wants people to do something else in the preparation stage. Spokeswoman Ranisa Rubin recommends Iowans take a written inventory of everything valuable in their houses.Rubin says the written log & pictures should be kept somewhere safe, but -not- in your home. It’ll be a big help in the event your home is hit. She also recommends people stock themselves a tornado emergency kit and keep it somewhere safe -inside- the home. The kit should have a flashlight, battery operated radio and first aid supplies.Iowa averages 35 tornadoes a year, but there were 59 twisters last year and more than 70 the year before.
