Three members of Catholic group in Des Moines have joined a nationwide fast to try and get the government to close down the U-S Army training school at Fort Benning, Georgia. The facility is know as the “School of the Americas” Father Frank Cordaro says the things taught at S-O-A do not enrich the world. He says its graduates are some of the most notorious human rights violators in the world.Cordaro says you don’t have to look very far to see the terrible things accomplished by the Latin American soliders trained at the school.Cordaro and two other men from the Catholic Workers Community are joining thousands across the country in the two-week fast that started last Friday.He says Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, a democrat, and Representative Jim Leach, a republican, have each sponsored legisation to end funding to the S-O-A. Cordaro says they hope the fast will make the other members of the Iowa congressional delegation take notice.The fast will end April 19th.
