Highway patrol officers from 38 states are meeting in Des Moines, calling attention to this weekend’s launch of the “Combined Accident Reduction Effort” — or CARE. Colonel Robert Garrison of the Iowa State Highway Patrol is the national chair of the CARE program. It will put an additional 80 state troopers on Iowa’s roads over the Memorial Day Holiday, zeroing in on drunk drivers and speeders. Governor Tom Vilsack was on hand for this morning’s news conference. The nation’s police and highway patrol officers are also launching an effort to ensure kids are properly buckled up — either in a child safety seat, booster seat or with the lap belt.
