One-hundred-25 Iowa schoolteachers are in Chicago this week for the National Education Association meeting — and revamping teacher pay is on their agenda. Iowa State Education Association President Jolene Franken.says the teachers’ union will not offer a specific plan of its own, but on July 31st the union’s executive board will adopt some general principles it believes should be included in any compensation changes.Franken says some of the Iowa delegates to this week’s N-E-A convention are already experimenting with alternative pay systems. The N-E-A convention wraps up on Thursday. Governor Vilsack has asked the head of Iowa Wellmark/Blue Cross-Blue Shield to develop a plan, which is to be released later this summer and a group of Iowa business leaders released their own ideas on the topic last month.
