The mayor of the northwestern Iowa town of Hawarden has resigned after being arrested on drug charges last week. Sioux County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Dale Wallinga says 47-year old George Jacobs was arrested July 6th after Jacobs bought marijuana from an undercover Sioux County sheriff’s deputy. Wallinga says Jacobs’ arrest was part of an ongoing investigation. He says arresting an area town’s mayor is unusual. He says the arrest shows that the drug problem isn’t singled out to any one socio-economic group.Jacobs was charged with possession of a controlled substance and was released on his promise to appear in court. Jacobs, who owns a catering business, had been mayor of the town of 25-hundred for seven months.
