Perhaps as many as 200 Iowa National Guard members are being notified they may be called upon soon for a mission overseas. Guard spokesman Colonel Robert King says the mobilization involves two separate units, the first in northeast Iowa. One unit, headquartered in Dubuque, would send about 110 members — it’s the A Company, 1st Battalion of the 133rd Infantry. King says the “peacekeeping” mission could begin as soon as September and would last six months. The Guard members would provide security for U-S forces in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. King says the second group of Iowa soldiers would come from the state’s west side. That’s the C Company, 1st Battalion of the 168th Infantry, based in Denison. The size of that group has yet to be determined. King says they would not ship out until wintertime.
