Do you worry your doctor may end up being a quack who shouldn’t be allowed near a stethoscope? The Clinical Staff Office at the University of Iowa works to ensure that never happens. Administrator Peggy Wilkinson says her agency performs background checks on doctors and nurse practitioners.Wilkinson says they check out over half of the doctors and nurse practitioners that come to Iowa. She says they check things like malpractice claims, but says one claim against a doctor won’t necessarily disqualify them. She says they don’t find many people they have to turn away.as the thoroughness of the check normally is enough to cause anyone with questions in their background to pull out before they complete the process. Wilkinson says it takes anywhere from 19 to 60 days to complete a background check on an individual. She says doctors coming into Iowa from out of the United States take longer to get their records gathered and checked.
