Iowa’s largest furniture store is being sold to a Nebraska company. Omaha-based Nebraska Furniture Mart is purchasing Homemakers Furniture of Des Moines. Homemakers President Dave Merschman says the sale will not affect any of the company’s operations. as the Homemakers name will remain and all of the company’s employees will be retained. Homemakers has 200 employees in its two Des Moines area stores and 240 in its Winterset production plant. Merschman’s family has owned Homemakers since the company was formed in 1974. He says they turned down Nebraska Furniture Mart’s attempt to purchase the company eight years ago, but decided now was the time to go ahead with it.The purchase price is not being disclosed. Nebraska Furniture Mart is owned by the Berkshire Hathaway Furniture Group that is lead by Billionaire investor Warren Buffett.
