The Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah, began last Friday and Iowa Jews are taking part in an effort this week to feed the needy.Members of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Des Moines, like others across Iowa, were given grocery bags printed with a verse from the Book of Isaiah. The effort is called Operation Isaiah, which is a national project that seeks to sensitize people to the needs of others.Rabbi Neil Sandler says members are urged to fill the bags with food and return them as they arrive for Yom Kippur services on Sunday.
