The Iowa Senate has voted to establish a two thousand dollar fine for politicians who’re found guilty of lying. The House had voted to put lying politicians in jail for up to a year, but the Senate watered the proposal down. Senator Andy McKean, a republican from Anamosa, says the threat of a fine, or reprimand from the Iowa Ethics Board, should be enough. He says it’s a step that will improve the quality of campaigns in Iowa. The bill also sets up penalties for those who use telephone “push polls” to smear an opponent.
