Iowa’s spring turkey hunting season is half over and Department of Natural Resources wildlife expert Terry Little says it’s looking like a good year for turkey numbers. Little says about 25-thousand hunters will try to bag one before the season ends May 20th. DNR Wildlife Research Supervisor Terry Little has a word of warning for joggers, hikers or mushroom hunters this spring. He says hunters will be out at dawn. Others in the woods should be careful not to wear the colors red, white and blue — those are the colors of a turkey’s head. Little says the wild turkey’s a smart bird and hard to catch, but a prize for hunters. They weigh 10-20 pounds, a lot bigger than other game birds, and survive winters well. The DNR estimates there are 200-thousand wild turkeys in the state.
