Iowa’s democrat U-S Senator says President Bush’s energy policies will take the country back a couple of centuries. Bush is reportedly going to put more federal money in coal and nuclear power, and call for drilling for oil in the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge. Harkin says Bush’s plan will get a lot of scrutiny in Congress. Senator Tom Harkin’s comments come on the eve of President Bush’s visit to Nevada, Iowa, where he’ll unveil his proposals on energy. Harkin says the President’s program is moving us back to the 19th Century.Harkin says it’s time to move away from the use of “carbon” energy like coal and oil.Harkin opposes moving into what he calls “our pristine natural wildlife areas” to drill for oil.
