Scientists in Japan have located a protein which might lead to a breakthrough in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The Japanese research found a protein which prevents the death of brain cells. Becky Groff, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association’s mid-Iowa chapter, says unfortunately, it’ll be awhile before this kind of research directly affects the lives of Alzheimer’s patients. She says it takes awhile to get from research to where it can help people’s lives.Seventy thousand Iowans have Alzheimer’s, and that number’s expected to grow as Iowa’s population ages.
