A key U-S Senator wants to pass legislation that would force Microsoft to make changes in its “Windows” computer program as punishment for being a monopoly, but Senator Charles Grassley says such drastic steps are not warranted. Grassley supports federal hearings to examine whether laws that deal with monopolies need to be rewritten. He says it’s wrong to use Microsoft as a scapegoat. Grassley says the U-S Supreme Court has ruled on whether Microsoft’s a monopoly and the case shouldn’t be re-tried in Congress. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, a high-ranking democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, wants to have Senate hearings to investigate Microsoft and he’s sponsoring a bill that would demand changes in the Windows software that would allow other companies’ products to be used, too.
