The campus police department at the University of Iowa is developing a unit to deal solely with sex crimes. The seven-member sex crimes unit at the U-of-I will officially begin work on August 20th. Duane Papke, the associate director the university’s Department of Public Safety, says his boss came up with the idea to give the issue 24-hour coverage. He says there’s not been any big increase in sex crimes. They’ve had one person handling sex crimes, and when she was on vacation, Papke says there wasn’t anyone dedicated to the job.Papke says the officers in the unit can handle all aspects of the investigation of sex crimes. He says their research hasn’t found any other such college program in the country.
