Miss America 2001 is in Iowa, touting “character education” for school kids. Angie Perez Baraquio will be at Atlantic middle school today, then meet with students and parents tonight. Baraquio says she’s trying to teach kids to be good people and good citizens. She says academics are important, but being a good person with good character is also important.Last year, Baraquio was a phys-ed teacher, coach and athletic director for 200 students at a Catholic school, and she implemented her “Character in the Classroom” program.Baraquio was crowned Miss America in October, and she’ll pass the title to a new Miss America on September 22nd. Baraquio intends to return to school for a masters degree in education administration, and hopes to land a job as a principal or superintendent.
