The highest-ranking woman in the Iowa legislature has ruled out running for Governor or higher office and will seek re-election to the state Senate. Senate President Mary Kramer, a republican from West Des Moines, considered retirement, too, but decided she wants another go-round in the legislature.Kramer says she’s promised to mentor and coach other women to run for Governor and Congress.Kramer, who is 66, is a former teacher who recently retired from her job as vice president for human resources at Blue Cross/Blue Shield. She may face a primary in her re-election bid, as state Senator Gene Maddox, a republican from Clive, lives in the new senate district created by the redistricting plan approved in June.
