It wasn’t just airplanes that were grounded right after Tuesday’s terrorist attack out east. Amtrak’s Kevin Johnson says all passenger trains nationwide were pulled over at the nearest siding or depot. They did a quick security check of engines and cars, and asked freight companies to check the tracks, and were back to regular operation by six P-M. After things are back to normal, Johnson says the train will always be a part of a complete national transportation system. He says you can take people out of planes or cars and alleviate congestion there, and have an integrated transportation system. Plans for several high-speed rail corridors throughout the nation’s heavily traveled routes include Iowa.In the Midwest Rail Initiative’s ten-year plan is included a Chicago-to-Omaha route. Johnson says passenger train travel and high-speed rail is an important part of a complete transportation network.
