Why didn’t the turtle cross the road? Because State of Iowa transportation engineers have devised a three-foot fence to keep reptiles off the roadway. It’s not just a move to stamp out road kill, it’s an effort to protect some fairly rare turtles and a couple kinds of snakes from attempting the often-fatal journey across a busy highway. A low fence of tight mesh will be put up along the edge of the road near Eddyville, and on a stretch of U.S. Highway 63, as well as around some construction zones.
