Democrat Congressman Leonard Boswell is touting four proposals he says will boost public schools in Iowa and across the nation. One would provide federal grants for hiring new teachers for early elementary grades; another would erase federal student loans for students who become teachers. Boswell says he wants America’s youngsters to be prepared to compete in the world community.Boswell says education spending is an investment in the future. The other bills Boswell’s backing would award grants for teacher prep programs and provide tax credits for school construction projects. Boswell says there’s no price tag on the proposals yet. Boswell’s moved from Davis City to Des Moines to seek re-election in Iowa’s new third congressional district. He’ll likely face republican Stan Thompson in November.
