Camp Dodge opens the doors of its “Iowa Gold Star Military Museum” for a special open house this (Saturday) afternoon. National Guard spokesman Colonel Robert King says it’s not just for people in uniform. When the museum was started, he says its mission was providing a way to record and display the history of Iowans in war and peace. So in there, he says, are displays you might to think of as “military,” like the big display of items about the state highway patrol, an area that will be expanded. Saturday’s open house features a series of prints by Captain Rudolph Von Ripper, who served with Iowa troops more than half a century ago. The open house is Saturday afternoon at Camp Dodge, north of Des Moines.
