Iowa’s top two elected democrats are offering a less-than-flattering assessment of Republican President Bush’s federal budget plan. Governor Tom Vilsack says Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” Act forced through new federal rules for schools, but his budget doesn’t provide the bucks to back it up. Vilsack says all 49 of the other governors would probably echo his concern. Senator Tom Harkin says the budget is “fiscally-reckless.”Harkin says Bush’s budget is radical and will rack up a two Trillion dollar deficit in ten years. He says it’s the most “radical and fiscally reckless” budget he’s seen in his 28 years of public service. Tom Daschle, the Democratic Leader in the U-S Senate, says the President’s budget makes the states’ financial situation worse. The three men made their comments during a news conference in Washington, D.C.
