Last second shot ends Iowa’s season in NIT

B.J. Elder’s shot in the lane with three tenths of a second remaining ended Iowa’s season as Georgia Tech edged the Hawkeyes 79-78 in the second round of the N-I-T in Iowa City. Elder’s basket came just seconds after he appeared to commit an offensive foul against Iowa guard Brody Boyd. Boyd says he was just trying to get in the way and take the charge, but there was no call.Boyd’s shooting picked up late in the season and he hopes that will carry over to next year. He says knocking down some shots helped his confidence after struggling most of the year.It would not have come down to the final play had it not been for a horrendous start in which the Hawkeyes trailed 36-18 in the first half.Iowa coach Steve Alford says they were stagnant coming out of the lockerroom, but he says the ended up giving a great effort. He says they thought they could get a charging call against Elder on the final play. He says the play before that seemed even more obvious as a charge.Alford says the key stat in the game was Tech winning the battle on the boards, as they shot 65 percent and only had four turnovers in the second half, but got outrebounded.The Hawkeyes close out the season 17-14.
