The so-called “shooting war” may be over in Iraq, but U-S forces will continue to need re-inforcement for some time. Colonel Robert King, spokesman for the Iowa National Guard, says another Iowa-based unit has gotten the call. The 1st Battalion, 133rd Aviation, has been alerted for possible federal active duty as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and the war on terrorism. Colonel King says the Boone-based unit may not be headed out for a few months yet, perhaps late summer or early fall. The 60-member unit is what the military calls a “command and control headquarters” which is trained to supervise various types of aviation units. King says the Iowa Guard is fast-approaching three-thousand active troops. He says just over 24-hundred troops are on federal active duty right now while 700 more are expected to leave next month.
