If your city hasn’t sprayed for mosquitoes in the past, it may do so this year. Assistant State Epidemiologist Curt Lohff says they didn’t really know how many cities had mosquito control programs last year when the West Nile Virus burst onto the scene. He says they did a study to find out. He says they found about 100 county or local governments had some sort of mosquito control program. He says the advent of West Nile will likely make more of the governments look at such programs. Lohff though isn’t recommending that local officials hurry to start spraying mosquitoes. He says they really only advocate spraying in cases were there are known concentrated cases of West Nile. Lohff says individuals can help out by wearing mosquito repellent and by dumping out any standing water in their back yards.
