An airport consultant is suggesting major changes for the city-owned Iowa City Airport — and the price of rental space in the hanger for airplane storage may go up as a result. Airport officials say they’re hoping to attract more flights to the airport — increasing revenue by selling more fuel. But Ron O’Neill, airport manager, concedes new landings won’t make the city much money. O’Neill says they’re going to “have to look at increasing revenues from non-aviation uses.” He says something has to be done with the large aviation industrial park which is currently sitting empty. O’Neill says they’re willing to either sell or lease the lots, but like everywhere else, commercial property isn’t moving that well. The consultant’s also recommending that the airport buy new electronics to make it easier for pilots to land in bad weather.
