It’ll be a scene out of the ’70s c-b era today as the Iowa Special Olympics hosts a trucker convoy. Special Olympics spokeswomen Jeanette Steinfeldt says it’s a way to highlight the organization and raise money. She says about 60 truckers had signed up to participate by Friday afternoon. She says the entry fee is 100 bucks. They’re starting out at the Highway 65 bypass near West Des Moines and are trucking to the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Jeanette says today’s convoy is the first of what they hope will be an annual event. Registration is from seven to 10 this morning and the convoy begins at 10:30. There will be food and entertainment at the fairgrounds when the trucks arrive. Jeanette says the convoys have been popular in other states, and they hope it catches on here.
