For the first time since the mid-70s, Dubuque may be fielding a class-A baseball team. Michael Gartner, who owns the Des Moines-based triple-A Iowa Cubs, is considering moving his other team, the Battle Creek (Michigan) Yankees to Dubuque.Gartner says Dubuque has the right ingredients to make a great home for his team.Dubuque leaders are expected to vote early next month on putting a bond issue to a citywide vote. It would put six-million dollars toward a 15-million dollar stadium. If it goes through, Gartner says he’d bring the Yankees to the northeast Iowa town.Gartner says he runs a baseball team like an opera or symphony, making it a community asset that’s priced so it’s cheaper to attend than a movie, clean and safe. Gartner says the attitude is right in Dubuque to support the team. The last pro baseball team, the Dubuque Packers, left town in 1976.
