The University of Iowa opens its home baseball season today against Western Illinois in Iowa City. Jack Dahm is in his first year as the Hawkeyes’ coach and says he was pleased with their recent trip to Florida. He says they played some great baseball the first three games against Maine and Stetson University. He says they had some letdowns later as fatigue set in, and that’s something they have to work on. Dahm says their offense might be the strong point early on. He says they haven’t been consistent yet offensively, but he thinks that will improve and they’ll be a solid offensive club. Iowa is 5-3 after going 4-4 on the road trip. He says they’re trying to get the attitudes in the program turned around and change the perceptions of Iowa baseball, so he says they’re are trying to stay away from talking about wins and loses. He says they want to focus on playing hard and with intensity when they take the field, and he says the wins will take care of themselves. Playing baseball this time of year is a gamble based on the weather, but Dahm thinks they’ll be able to get today’s game in. He jokes that they promised him when he took that job that the weather would be good. He says they could see a little rain, but the temperatures should be in the 50’s and he says you can’t ask for anything better during March. Iowa is set to play Western Illinois at six p.m.
