The Iowa State Cyclones may be without their top defensive player for the entire season. Coach Dan McCarney suspended defensive end Jason Berryman after he was jailed last week by Ames police for robbery. His name was missing for the roster handed out during the Cyclones’ annual media day on Monday. “I reserve the right to take further action,” McCarney told reporters. “Other than that, there’s really not going to be any further comment until it’s been resolved through the legal system.” McCarney says his concern is with the players who reported to practice. “When it happened, it was a tremendous distraction to me and to the program…but we have 105 players here right now. That’s my focus,” McCarney said. Moving into Berryman’s spot is sophomore Shawn Moorehead from Mason City. The Cyclones were 2-10 last season but McCarney is confident they will bounce back. McCarney directly challenged reporters who he says have been writing or talking about the program’s “downward spiral.” “Please keep writing that damn stuff, would ya,” McCarney said. “It’ll bring out the best in all of us.”
