The Iowa State Patrol has released more information on an accident in Fayette County that took the life of a baseball player at Upper Iowa University. That patrol report says the accident happened Thursday shortly after 10 p.m. on highway 150 six miles north of West Union. A pickup driven by 21-year-old Jacob Burling went out of control on a bridge, striking the west side of the bridge railing. The pickup then came off the bridge, entered a ditch, rolled over and became airborne. Burling’s truck then vaulted over a gravel road, entered another ditch, and struck a tree before coming to rest on its top. Burling died in the accident. He was a senior pitcher for the Upper Iowa baseball team and had transferred to Fayette from Illinois Central College.
